Research & Development
The Autonomous Systems Laboratory (ASL) at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) develops innovative technology in the field of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
Research and development in the ASL includes efforts to develop:
- biomimetic behaviors for AUVs to sample the environment more efficiently
- hardware and software to automate target recognition by AUVs
- methods to detect submarine wakes, and to track and trail submarines, by AUVs
- easy-to-use and practical software for mission planning and supervision for multiple networked AUVs
Areas of Expertise
- Development of rapid LabVIEW AUV software
- Neural network processing and target recognition (US Patent Pending)
- Systems design and hardware integration for small and large AUVs
