Sudden unusual mortality syndrome (SUMS) in oysters: Workshop Report

With support from the NOAA Fisheries Office of Aquaculture, a workshop was convened to characterize the state of the science behind the sudden unusual mortality syndrome in oysters, highlight urgent questions, and identify key priorities for future research that would more fully illuminate the causes of mortality and possible strategies for mitigation. Twenty eight workshop participants representing eight universities from New York to Texas convened at the VIMS campus in Gloucester Point, Virginia, from January 22-23, 2024, with the workshop and recommendations in this final report.

Oyster Server Training Course

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science offers a training course to servers and other professionals in seafood restaurants on how oyster varietals differ and help you tell the stories to your customers.  In addition, we answer staff questions so everyone can feel more confident when speaking to customers about oyster aquaculture.
