An online course for Virginia’s non-commercial oyster growers and enthusiasts
About the Course
This online course is developed for members of the general public who are interested in the science behind farming oysters in Virginia. It is a required component for those wishing to obtain Master Oyster Gardener status. The course is prepared by professionals in the Marine Advisory Program at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) and the Virginia Sea Grant Marine Extension Program. Course content is provided by faculty and staff from VIMS and other Virginia state agencies.
VIMS Marine Advisory Program initiated this programming in the late 90's and launched the first Master Oyster Gardening Class in partnership with the Tidewater Oyster Gardeners Association (TOGA) in 1998.
Course Format
The course is managed on Canvas and broken up into several modules with video presentations and links to additional information. You can access the content at any time and learn at your own pace. Those taking the course to obtain Master Oyster Gardener status must formally register and will be quizzed on the information presented.
