Virginia Scientists & Educators Alliance (VA SEA)
About VA SEA
Educators from the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Virginia (CBNERRVA) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's (VIMS) Marine Advisory Program created the Virginia Scientists and Educators Alliance (VA SEA) in 2015. VA SEA is a network of graduate students, teachers, and informal educators aimed at translating scientific research into usable lesson plans.
Since 2015, 70 graduate students from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VA Tech), University of Virginia (UVA), and Old Dominion University (ODU) have developed 79 middle and high school lesson plans based on their current research. All lesson plans are vetted by classroom teachers, and science-fair-style open houses are held each spring to introduce the newly created materials to educators.
