Duties/Specialties
  • Molecular diagnostics to detect harmful algal bloom organisms (HAB) and human pathogens in finfish, shellfish, environmental water and sediment samples
  • Isolation & quantification of Ostreid herpes virus (OsHV-1) DNA and its microvariants (μVars) in cultured oyster lines: exposure trials
  • Detection & quantification of total and pathogenic Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in oysters and waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay
Techniques/Skills
  • Molecular: DNA & RNA isolation & purification, PCR, qPCR, RT-qPCR, sequencing, cloning, in-situ hybridization
  • Microbiological: Growth & maintenance of bacterial, viral & phage cultures (Vibrio spp, norovirus, adenovirus, coliform & coliphage)
  • Tissue culture: Aseptic culturing & cryopreservation of a variety of cell lines (mammalian, fish & protozoan)
  • Other: Northern, Southern & Western blotting, Elisa, LP chromatography, atomic absorption spectroscopy, protein & agarose electrophoresis
